A full slate of U.S. crash-test safety ratings are in for the 2015 Toyota Camry, and the results are mostly top-notch.

With federal New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) test results for the 2015 model released in the past week, the Camry earns an excellent five-star overall rating. That matches up nicely with this model's Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick Plus status and 'Advanced' front crash prevention rating with the optional Technology Package and its Pre-Collision System.

Yet there are just a few blemishes that keep it a notch below the all-five-star ratings that have been earned by two of its leading rivals, the Honda Accord and the Subaru Legacy.

It’s worth pointing out that just in the past couple of years there have been three different Camrys with respect to safety ratings. Toyota recently—for a so-called ‘2014.5’ model year run that began last December—made some meaningful changes to the Camry’s protection, with an enhanced front structure that improved a ‘poor’ frontal impact score to ‘acceptable.’

Now the reengineered 2015 Camry, which has been given more than just a normal mid-cycle refresh—with new sheetmetal, a new interior, and better body stiffness thanks to new welds, among other changes—has just completed its testing from the federal government, and it’s renewed its five-star overall rating, with a combination of four-star frontal ratings and five-star side crash protection. These models do extend to 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid models as well.

Oddly, the 2015 Camry actually earned a lower rating than the previous 2014 and 2014.5 models in the federal side pole test, which simulates a side impact with a narrow object like a utility pole or tree. In that test, which isn’t factored into the official federal side rating, the Camry’s rating fell to four stars from the previous five.
