James was adopted. His mom passed away when he was age 15. His dad passed away the Tuesday before September 11, 2001. He has a relationship with his biological mother, as well as her son and daughter. He also has a relationship with his biological father (a native belonging to the Aamjiwnaang First Nation in Canada), as well as his 2 daughters.

Mick Wingert is the reason James attended Roosevelt School of the Arts, met his wife, and became an actor. Mick was an assistant director on a production of Sleeping Beauty at the Children's Playhouse in Fresno, California. James was a part of the cast, playing the role of Prince Charming.
